5 Tips to Keep Your Pup Safe In the Cold

January 29, 2020

With the holidays in the rear view mirror, and opening day only 2 months away, that can only mean one thing... We're in the coldest stretch of the winter season. AtGrounds & Hounds Coffee Co., we work hard to keep your mugs warm all winter, but we want to also work hard to keep your pup equally warm and safe until the spring season rolls around.

For our cold climate friends, we put together a list of 5 quick tips to keep your pup safe until the spring showers arrive!

1). Keep a Close Eye on the Temperature
This one seems like a no brainer, but all too often we allow our pups out for far longer than they should be when the temperature is just too low. When the temperature drops to 20 degrees (F) or below, cut those walks down to ten minutes or less.

2). Know Your Pup's Limits
When it comes to cold weather, not all pups are created equal. Simply understanding your dog's size, type of coat, coat color or amount of body fat can certainly affect how your pup interacts with those chilly days outdoors. And hey, it's never a bad idea to look into a dog coat, especially for those smaller breeds.

3). Keep a Close Eye
Knowing your pup's body language and their signs of distress is key when it comes to cold weather. If your doggo seems anxious, starts to shiver, lifts their paws off the ground or begins whining - it's time to bring playtime inside. Continuing a came of fetch with one of our Grounds & Hounds pup toys is a great way to have fun while staying safe.

4). Bring On the Booties!
Adding a pair of boots to your dog's wardrobe is a great way to keep their paws safe from not just the cold, but will protect them against ice, gravel, ice or anti-freeze.

5). Be Sure to Keep Up the Exercise!
Since the cold weather cuts down on walk time, it's important to keep your pup active. We recommend a few rounds of tug of war, fetch, running up and down the stairs or even some wrestle. Your pup will stay in shape and it's a wonderful way to build quality time together!

We hope these five easy tips get you through the cold season and remember, a nice cup of Grounds & Hounds coffee can help YOU get through the those frost-filled days too. Enjoy the outdoor with your pup (just not for too long).
