  • Improve Your Brew: 12 Hour Cold Brew

    September 27, 2018 5 min read

The dog days of summer call for a refreshing cold brew enjoyed in the sun with your four-legged best friend!  But, before you shell out money for pre-made cold brew, creating a batch in your kitchen may be easier than you think.

Here at the Grounds & Hounds HQ, we like to use a Filtron Brew System which runs about $35 online, and our guide is built around the use of this device.

However, if you don’t have/don’t want to purchase any new brewing equipment, you can opt for a makeshift cold brew set-up by simply  immersing the grounds in a large french press, and straining the coffee through an almond nut milk bag.

However, if you don’t have/don’t want to purchase any new brewing equipment, you can opt for a makeshift cold brew set-up by simply  immersing the grounds in a large french press, and straining the coffee through an almond nut milk bag.

    Step 1: Select your coffee

The most important way to improve your brew is to use high-quality beans. Our line of organic, fair trade specialty coffees are selected from some of the best coffee growing regions in the world and roasted to perfection in small batches. For a subtlety sweet and floral cold brew, we recommend our latest seasonal release, Sunny Spot! Or, for a full-bodied, savory option, be sure to try our top selling dark roast, Alpha Blend.

Step 2: Plug the brewing basin and insert the pre-soaked filter pad

Insert the small rubber stopper into the hole at the bottom of the plastic brewing container. (note: be sure to insert the stopper from the outside of the container!). Wet the reusable filter pad and secure it inside the brewing container. It should fit snuggly into the bottom of the container.

    Step 3: Measure your beans

To make a full batch of cold brew concentrate, we use one full 12 oz. bag of coffee. No additional measurement required!

    Step 4: Grind your coffee

To get the brewing process started, grinding your preferred blend with medium/coarse consistency – approximately the size of sea salt

*While we always recommend grinding your whole bean coffee fresh, we understand that it can be difficult to grind 12 oz. of coffee without a commercial grinder.  For those who are in a hurry to start brewing, our ground coffees are perfectly sized for cold brew straight from the bag.

Step 5: Combine ground coffee and filtered water in the brewing container

To brew a full batch of cold brew, use 7 cups of filtered water and 12 oz. of ground coffee. To ensure full saturation of the coffee grounds, pour coffee and water into the container, starting with 4 oz. of coffee followed by 2 cups of water. Gently press the mixture to fully saturate the grounds (do not stir) and insert the plastic cover.

Step 6: Cover and let sit at room temperature for 12 hours

Be patient. We recommend a few rounds of fetch with your four-legged best friend to help pass the time!

Step 7: Drain cold brew concentrate into a sealable decanter

Next, hold the brewing container over the decanter and remove the rubber stopper, allowing the brewed concentrate to drain . You many need an extra set of hands for this step, as the coffee concentrate will begin streaming within 1-2seconds of removing the plug.

    Step 8: Dilute and enjoy!

We recommend a ratio of 1 part concentrate to 3 parts filtered water over ice. For a stronger cup add more concentrate, for a lighter cup add more water. The remaining concentrate will remain fresh, if refrigerated, for 2+ weeks.

Sit back and soak in the summer sun with a loving pup by your side.
