  • Peace Trade Coffee: Female Farmers of the Democratic Republic of Congo

    April 24, 2023 2 min read

Our Peace Trade Congolese Umoja Coffee is more than just a Microlot coffee! This specialty grown coffee helps support over 1000 farmers (a majority of which are female farmers), and cooperative leaders in the Kivu region of Democratic Republic of Congo.

What is Peace Trade?  We sourced our green coffee from Mighty Peace Coffee which is a women and minority-owned social impact coffee importer with access to the finest green coffee grown in Congo. Mighty Peace Coffee was born out of the Congolese Peace Movement. Their overall mission is to make a difference in the world.

This amazing company prioritizes the “love of humanity, the health of the planet, and service to communities” which in the end leaves a true legacy they can be proud of. We are always happy to work with a company who has a similar mission to us, at Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co.

The green coffee we sourced is certified Fair Trade and Organic! This program has helped provide stability in the coffee sector in a region that is often fraught with coffee smuggling. For many of the farmers here, coffee is a key source of income and helps promote rights for marginalized groups.

Congolese farmers are full of vibrant optimism and hope for change. The purchase of this coffee positively impacts the lives of children, women, and men who are dreaming of independence, freedom, and peace. It also directly stimulates economic activity, raising the living standards of hardworking farmers, while ending the cycle of poverty, conflict, and injustice.

Each farmer has their own individual story. Take for example Victorina, pictured here. Victorina is one of the farmers who contributes to this beautiful green coffee production. With the sales from her farm, she has been able to build a home, purchase clothes for her family, and pay for her children’s school fees. Furthermore, she is given a level of security since she doesn’t need to travel to find a buyer, which eliminates risk of attack during travel.

Our Peace Trade Congolese Microlot Coffee is delicious when brewed in just about every method, but truly shines when brewed using a pour over or Chemex. You'll experience delicate and crisp notes of Lemon, Orange and Cantaloupe with rich and savory notes of Dark Chocolate from the very first sip. Truly a specialty coffee experience you won't want to miss.

Overall, you can’t go wrong with your direct impact when purchasing this coffee. Not only does your purchase help the beautiful farmers in the Congo, but just like every other purchase from Grounds & Hounds, 20% of the profits go toward rescue initiatives for pups in need.
