Rescue Roast Feature: The Sato Project
On the beaches and streets of Puerto Rico, an estimated 500,000+ stray dogs, known as satos, fight daily for survival. These resilient pups are survivors of neglect, abandonment, and overpopulation—but thanks to The Sato Project, their stories don’t end there.
Since its founding in 2011, The Sato Project has rescued over 8,000 satos, provided them with world-class veterinary care, and flown them to loving forever homes across the U.S. mainland. But their mission goes far beyond rescue.
Through their powerful outreach program, Operation Sato, they’ve provided spay/neuter, vaccines, and microchips to 4,500+ dogs, working to break the cycle of overpopulation. And in the wake of natural disasters like Hurricane Maria and the 2020 earthquakes, they’ve expanded their mission into emergency relief—distributing over 150,000 pounds of supplies to animals and communities in need.
They’ve also saved countless lives from shelters with 94% euthanasia rates, and helped reunite 268 dogs and cats with their families after crises through their No Dog Left Behind initiative.
This September, Grounds & Hounds is proud to stand beside them.
