Rescue Roast Feature: Vintage Pet Rescue
At Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co., we believe every dog deserves a second chance — especially the ones that are often overlooked. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce our November Rescue Roast partner: Vintage Pet Rescue, a Rhode Island–based nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, sheltering, and celebrating senior and special needs dogs.
From November 1–30, 100% of profits from every bag of Rescue Roast sold will go directly to support Vintage Pet Rescue’s life-changing work. That means every sip of your morning brew will help provide sanctuary, comfort, and care to elderly dogs who deserve nothing less than love in their golden years.
In this month’s feature, we’ll take you behind the scenes of Vintage Pet Rescue’s inspiring mission, share real stories of the dogs they’ve saved, and show how your daily coffee habit can help rewrite the final chapters for some of the most vulnerable pups out there.
Who Is Vintage Pet Rescue?
Vintage Pet Rescue (VPR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in Rhode Island by Kristen and Marc Peralta. The couple met in 2013 while volunteering at an animal shelter, bonded over their shared love for senior dogs, and went on to build an organization focused entirely on giving older pups the love and dignity they deserve.
Unlike traditional animal shelters, VPR provides cage-free, sanctuary-style living for its residents. Their mission is threefold:

Rescue and care for homeless senior and special needs dogs

Help rehome adoptable seniors through a compassionate adoption program

Raise awareness about the importance of adopting senior pets
To date, VPR has saved the lives of over 1,200 senior dogs and given countless others a soft place to land when they need it most.
Why Senior Dogs Need Us
When most people walk into a shelter looking to adopt, they often gravitate toward puppies or younger dogs. Sadly, that leaves senior and special needs dogs at much higher risk of being euthanized due to age, medical needs, or simply being overlooked.
But senior dogs still have so much life — and love — to give.
They’re loyal, gentle, and already past the training stage. Many have lived full lives as companions and are simply seeking comfort in their final months or years. With proper veterinary care, a warm bed, and a loving environment, these dogs can thrive well into their golden years.
Vintage Pet Rescue exists to make that future possible.
A Home, Not a Kennel
What makes Vintage Pet Rescue truly special is their cage-free approach to rescue. At their sanctuary, dogs live together in cozy, home-like spaces with access to beds, couches, sunbeams, and (of course) plenty of treats.
Their environment is designed to reduce stress and promote connection — both among the dogs and between dogs and volunteers. Whether it’s a blind senior pup finding his favorite nap spot or a three-legged chihuahua exploring the backyard, every dog is treated like family.
Medical Care, Dignity, and Love
Caring for senior dogs often means addressing a range of medical needs, from arthritis and dental issues to mobility support and chronic conditions. VPR provides:

But most of all, they provide unconditional love. Kristen, Marc, and their team of volunteers go above and beyond to make every dog feel seen, safe, and cherished — whether they’re with VPR for a few weeks or a few years.
From Sanctuary to Forever Homes
Not all senior dogs are terminal or in need of lifelong care. Many of VPR’s residents go on to be adopted into loving homes through the Vintage Pet Rescue adoption program. These are often people looking for a calmer, more mellow companion — and they find just that in these grateful, gentle souls.
By promoting senior dog adoptions, VPR is helping shift public perception. They’re proving that older dogs aren’t broken — they’re just experienced, wise, and ready to love.
