The day you adopt your dog, the “Gotcha Day” is always life changing, and Molly’s gotcha day was no different for me. March 25th is the anniversary of my “Gotcha Day” with Molly.  That day, I didn’t just get a new family member, I found a best friend and soul mate.  Molly is the inspiration for Grounds & Hounds and our mission to help rescue dogs everywhere.

Adopting a dog can change many lives for the better.  You’re saving the life of the pup you rescue, while also making room in the shelter for another dog who needs a second chance.

But it’s not just about the pups you save.  The benefits to your life are truly immeasurable.  At the very least, you’ll get a companion that will love you unconditionally, and often  so much more.  For me, it was a best friend and a life changing catalyst.  For others it might be emotional support, a sense of security, or something else entirely unexpected and wonderful.

So please foster and adopt if possible.  And be sure to share with us your “Gotcha Day” stories to inspire others.  Let’s empty the shelters while filling our homes with amazing dogs and our life with amazing stories.

My husband I adopted our Remus as a 2-yr-old male through the Great Pyrenees Club of Western Pennsylvania in 2014. We had just lost our first beloved Pyr, and were also both dealing with highly stressful jobs and family issues. Remus, though having suffered from prior physical abuse and long-term neglect, immediately showed us unbelievable love, joy and devotion to overcome our sadness. Because of his inspiration, we have become devoted members of the GPCWP, and continue to work to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome hundreds of Great Pyrenees over the last 8 years, with more to come.

Since Molly is a beautiful Dalmatian, I’d like to thank Dalmatian Rescue of Colorado which is how I found my Dals four years ago. When people comment on Rocky and Tilly, I always feel the need to point out that I didn’t buy them from a breeder. They were rescued by DRC from a puppy mill after many long months in horrible conditions. They stopped in Omaha with foster moms Erin and Anna until I connected with them. Many thanks to all the wonderful organizations who rescue animals and the amazing foster parents who care for them while waiting for their furever homes. And a big thank you for Grounds and Hounds for all you do to bring awareness to us all. Happy Anniversary!

We just celebrated Kowhai’s 13th birthday. On September 24th, we celebrate his 12th anniversary
“gotcha day”. Kowhai and I fell in love over the internet—I live in Cincinnati, OH and he was living in Tallahassee, FLA. He was wounded. I was wounded. Together, we began a journey to heal. Two years later, we fostered failed, falling head over heals for the tiniest dachshund puppy (barely two pounds at 12 weeks old.) Kowhai and I recognized that she was the missing puzzle “peace.” If ever there was a soul that lived Shakespeare’s “though she be but little she is mighty” it is our Pip. Her “gotcha day” anniversary is July 4th—the day we declared independence from grief!

Thank you for saving pups via excellent coffee and accessories! You are an inspiration!

Thank you for sharing your Gotcha Day with Molly. We celebrate 4 Gotcha Days in our home (1 in remembrance) for Haylee (Russell Terrier Mix from Oregon Humane), Charlee (Terrier, Dachshund, Chihuahua Mix – also Oregon Humane), Jack (Lab, Boxer, Pit Mix from Spokane Humane) and our latest, Baxter (Parson Russell puppy – also Spokane Humane). They bring us love, joy and “learning opportunities” every day and we cherish every moment!

Thank you for doing what you’re doing at Grounds & Hounds. We are proud to support you since we won your silent auction basket last year for the Humane Society of the United States; not to mention the coffee is outstanding!

Last November 25th was the 5th Anniversary of Tilly’s “Gotcha Day”. I am her fourth home but that didn’t make any difference to me. Once I saw that sweet little face I knew she had found her forever home. She will be 14 years young on April 4th and I am so glad she is in my life.

I adopted Eddy as a senior dog. I did not know what I was in for. It is the BEST decision I ever made. His love shows no boundaries. Eddy adores his kitty siblings and they are known to snuggle in front of the fire. I never wanted that big of a dog, male, black and senior at 7. But his gentle eyes haunted me from his rescue photo. So, we ventured the 60 minute drive to meet this boy. It was love at first sniff! We left with him and have not regretted one minute! If anyone is hesitant to take on a senior dog, put that hesitation aside. They are full of love and so grateful for the chance to show it.

Three Percent. That is the survival rate of a shelter dog in Puerto Rico. It’s a grim fate for a “Sato,” the name commonly used to refer to homeless dogs in Puerto Rico and astonishingly, there are estimated to be as many as 500,000 of these Sato pups.
