  • A Second Chance For Puerto Rican Pups

    December 18, 2021 2 min read

Last Weekend while many of us were prepping or celebrating the holidays an aircraft left an airfield in Puerto Rico bound for New York. Inside that plane were 140 homeless dogs. Every one of which was getting a second shot at a new and better life thanks to the Sato Project.

The Sato Project is rescuing what are known locally as Satos, a slang or colloquial term for a street or stray dog. Unfortunately, satos are not revered. So, you have dogs that are being dumped and being surrendered.  Many of these dogs are mistreated, starving or worse. Current estimates put the number of these Puerto Rican Satos at 500,000. That’s a lot of dogs desperate for a loving home and shelters on Puerto Rico aren’t able to keep up. Once a dog enters a shelter on the island it has a survival rate of less than 5%.

Well ten years ago Sato Project founder Chrissy Beckles decided to do something about it- and set a goal of trying to save just one dog a week. Well within the first three months she had saved 81 dogs.  And now ten years later the Sato project has rescued, rehabilitated and saved over six thousand dogs.  These dogs are resilient and smart and beautiful and they come in all shapes and sizes. Their freedom flights regularly bring the unloved to the loving. Putting dogs directly into the waiting arms of someone just anxiously waiting to hug their new soul pup. A Sato no more. These rehabilitated pups get to the mainland and people go crazy for them.

Thanks to every single hero who has purchased Rescue Roast, Grounds and Hounds was able to fund the transfer of 35 pups on Sato Project’s December rescue flight. And with your help, we’ll be able to support a second chance for even more at-risk satos on the island!
