  • Five Reasons to Adopt Not Shop!

    May 21, 2021 2 min read 2 Comments

There’s a number of reasons that rescuing a pup is the better option over buying. It's beneficial not just for the pups, but for you, too. In this video we cover 5 reasons why you should rescue your pup rather than buy a dog from a breeder!

    You’ll Save Two Lives

We've made great strides in the world of rescue, but nearly 700,000 dogs are still euthanized in shelters every year in the U.S. Adopting not only saves your new pup, but it also creates space at the rescue or shelter for the next pup who needs it. Purchasing from a breeder, however, does not help reduce animal shelter populations. In fact, it can add to the problem as a large percentage of breeder dogs also end up in shelters.

    You’ll Save Money

Who doesn't love a good deal? Rescuing a dog is, on average, ten times cheaper than buying! The average cost of buying a pup is currently around $1,500, but can run several thousands more depending on breed. According to one survey, some breeds command a price as high as $14,000 for a puppy! To adopt from a local shelter, the average is about $150, which usually includes spay/neuter services and all vaccinations.

You Could Get a Healthier Pet

Some estimates say that 75% of shelter pups are mixed breed. These dogs are less likely to develop genetic disorders, so adopting means a three quarters chance at a healthier pup. According to one study of over 27,000 dogs, mixed breed pups saw fewer instances of hip dysplasia, spinal disorders, joint issues, heart disease and cancer.

    You’ll Skip the Puppy Headaches

Most adoptable dogs at the shelters are adolescent or adult pups. These experienced dogs tend to come house trained and many have additional skills such as leash training or tricks! The rescue will be more than happy to tell you what useful skills your potential new pup knows. So, adopting often means skipping the hard work of puppy training and sometimes even getting a bonus!

    You Can Foster to Adopt

A large percentage, as much as 25%, of dogs originate from a breeder. These pups are likely turned in because of unexpected behavior or expense. But one benefit unique to rescue dogs is the ability to foster. By temporarily housing a pup, you can find out what kind of dog will best fit your lifestyle. And when you’re ready to adopt, you’ll already have the pup right there at home.

So there are 5 great reasons to adopt instead of shop. What are your reasons for adopting? Let us know why it’s important to you!
