  • About the Heroes: Young at Heart Senior Pet Adoption

    December 17, 2018 2 min read 7 Comments

In April of 2005, the mission became clear for a small group of people who found that pups with salt & pepper fur and cats hard of hearing needed a second chance more than most. Young at Heart aims to help older pups and animals, often finding themselves in an unfamiliar shelter environment after being part of a loved part of a family, find a calming hand to take them home and enjoy their golden years.

Based in the Chicagoland area, Young at Heart is soon opening the first Illinois adoption center and sanctuary specifically for our senior friends, a place where age is just a number. This incredible safe haven allows cats and dogs to not only roam in a cage-free environment but are provided the proper food and medical treatment necessary for comfort. The devotion that YAH members, donators and volunteers demonstrate, truly reminds us that love has no bounds.

One of the things that I think surprises people when they adopt a senior pet is just how quickly that pet will bond to you and just know that you are their person. Falling in love with a senior pets takes so little effort, and that's one of the reasons why people tend to be repeat adopters and stick to senior pets once they've adopted one. Young at Heart has so many adopters who have gone through the younger puppy stages with previous dogs tell us "oh my gosh, this was such an easy transition! I will only adopt senior dogs from here on out!" – Dawn Kemper, Executive Director

Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co. has launched a new program, in which all the profits of our popular Rescue Roast go to a different shelter each period – Young at Heart being the first recipient! We couldn’t be more thrilled to support YAH and we appreciate all the work they are doing for our senior pals!

Beyond supporting our Rescue Roast, visit the Young at Heart website and consider donating to this amazing cause that Dawn Kemper and her team have worked so hard to build.

I’ve always had a miniature schnauzer, we recently just lost our male fur baby. I am so lonely without him. I need one older than a puppy to have by my side to love and care for. I took my rascal everywhere with me. I have no voice , because of cancer. Please contact my wife by email.

I am “elderly”. I have always had bull terriers but currently do not have one. I would like to find a three or four year old to keep me company.

My furry buddy just recently passed away at fourteen years of age. I’m finding living alone during this pandemic with few visitors is making me feel so lonely. I need a fur buddy who needs me as much as I need it to love and be responsible for. Since I’m 85, a puppy would not be so good for me. But, an adult dog – or even a senior dog – would be ideal. Please help me find a fur buddy to love and care for as long as we both shall live. Sounds like a good proposal to me, at least. Please help – thank you so very much, Bethine Siron
